This year the popular GDR series “Spuk im Hochhaus” celebrates its 40th birthday – that’s how long it has been since the seven-part film series was produced and first broadcast. It is about the innkeepers August and Jette Deibelschmidt, who rob travelers while they are still alive and return to earth years after their death, where they must do seven good deeds. You land directly in a DDR record… and the adventures take their course!

One of the saddest episodes of the series is probably the one about old grandma Kroll, who bakes honey-almond cakes for her family – but son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren don’t have time, they just come to visit. Poor grandma (played by Käthe Reichel) is left alone. The good deed: The Deibelschmidts steal the cake and spread it around the house – this is how grandma Kroll makes many new friends…

“Spuk im Hochhaus”: This is how the cake from the popular GDR series works

Anyone who knows the series has probably dropped their teeth several times at the sight of the delicious cake. But: There are recipes for everything, including this amazing sheet cake! We reveal how the pastry succeeds – so well that your family will clean the pastry completely…

You need: 200 grams of butter, 250 grams of sugar, 500 grams of honey, 700 grams of flour, 1 pinch of salt, 250 grams of ground almonds, 5 eggs, 1 packet of baking powder, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 pinch of cloves, 100 grams of lemon peel, 100 grams of orange peel . For the glaze: 100 grams of powdered sugar, juice of one lemon. For the chocolate icing: 60 grams of chocolate, 60 grams of butter. Also whole almonds for decoration.

Here’s how it works: Put the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and stir with a hand mixer until fluffy. Then gradually add the honey and eggs. Mix the flour, salt, almonds and baking powder together in a separate bowl and then gradually stir these dry ingredients into the butter-sugar mixture. Finally, add the spices and the orange peel and lemon zest.

Preheat the oven to 170 degrees fan. Remove about 400 grams of the dough and knead the flour on the work surface with two hands so that it becomes a little firmer.

Then roll out thinly and cut into strips with a pizza cutter. Spread the rest of the dough on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Then lay the strips across the floor and press down a little. Bake the cake in the oven for about 45 minutes until nicely golden brown.

Finally, stir in a thick glaze made from lemon juice and powdered sugar. Melt the chocolate in a water bath and stir in the butter. When the cake has cooled, pour the glaze alternately into the cubes and decorate with almonds. Enjoy your meal!
